Semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid peptide that is structurally similar to the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). It is formally known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist which is a compound that mimics the action of GLP-1 in the body by activating GLP-1 receptors.
In less science-heavy terms, semaglutide imitates some of the effects of the body's natural GLP-1 hormone. Through this process, it can increase glucose-dependent insulin release, reduce glucagon secretion, slow gastric emptying, and increase feelings of fullness, which can lead to reduced food intake.
Unlike naturally occurring GLP-1, semaglutide has been chemically modified to remain active in the body for much longer, allowing for once-weekly administration in approved injectable formulations.
This peptide comes in lyophilized vials.
