Melanotan II (MT-2) is a synthetic peptide analogue of the naturally occurring hormone α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally developed in the 1980s–1990s to explore potential protective effects against UV damage by stimulating the skin’s natural tanning response. Melanotan II is a short peptide chain that interacts with melanocortin receptors in the body and has been found to influence pigmentation and several other physiological processes.
Melanotan II is primarily known for its ability to increase melanin production in the skin, which can lead to a darker complexion and enhanced tanning with less UV exposure. Reported effects include stimulation of skin pigmentation, reduction of sunburn risk due to increased melanin, and potential appetite-suppressing properties. It has also been studied for possible effects on sexual function through actions on melanocortin receptors, though research is still ongoing.
The peptide is thought to work by activating melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R in skin cells, which promotes melanin synthesis in melanocytes. Through activity at other melanocortin receptor subtypes, it may also influence appetite, energy balance, and sexual arousal pathways.
